An Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710 – 1736) lived just for 26 years and composed for 5 years. However, he created quite a number of pieces: more than 10 operas, oratorios, mesas, cantatas, pieces to be performed in church, more than 30 sonatas for trio, as well as operatic symphonies and overtures.

La serva padrona was originally composed as an intermezzo to Pergolesi's opera seria, Il Prigionier Superbo (The Proud Prisoner) and started so called Querelle des Bouffons, a musical and esthetical dispute in operatic questions. The two parties involved were supporters of an old operatic school on one hand and the representatives of the progressive French scientists, artists and writers on the other hand. The progressive party was represented, in particular, by the geniuses of the Enlightenment Deny Diderot, Jan Jacque Russo, Fredric Melchior Grimm. They saw the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment in the opera La Serva Padrona, namely true-to-life plot and conflicts, democratization of the musical language. The French comic opera was born as a result of that dispute.
