The concert Wagner’s Universe to be held on May 22 will be dedicated to the composer’s 200th birthday anniversary

Wagner’s Universe concert is to be on The Odessa Opera stage on May 22. It will be dedicated to the 200th birthday anniversary of the composer.

This will be the second performance for the programme. Opening night was on December 16, 2012. Wagner’s music had not sounded in the theatre for eighty years before that very day.

Music director for the Odessa Opera and its Principal conductor, People’s Artist of the Republic of Moldova, Alekandru Samoile has made up a programme in such a way so the audience could listen to the best samples of Wagner’s operas in one logical unit. The concert comprises orchestra overtures, symphonic fragments, areas and choruses from the operas Der fliegende Holländer, Die Walküre, Tristan e Isolda, Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Tannhäuser performed by the Odessa Opera orchestra, The Odessa Opera Chorus, premiere singers and opera soloists Natalia Pavlenko, a prizewinner in many international singing competitions (dramatic soprano), and Victor Mityushkin, Honoured Artist of Ukraine (dramatic baritone).

The first performance of this programme had positive media coverage and was warmly accepted by the public.

“The people being in the audience on that night (December 16, - editor’s note) were accepting Wagner’s music, I have no doubt in it. My personal culminating point of that night was the music from Tristan und Isolde. It demanded maximum emotional feedback from both the performers and the audience. To convey the artistic image to the audience performers must put quite a lot of energy in this music. As they say, the main thing is not what the score explicates but what the score implicates,” Aleksandru Samoile told in his interview to Odessa Daily evaluating the opening night.
