Turandot on June 30 will be dedicated to 40th anniversary of creative activity of Principal choir master

Turandot by Giacomo Puccini on June 30 will be dedicated to 40th anniversary of creative activity of Principal choir master of Odessa’s Opera Leonid Butenko, Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine.

Tetyana Zakharchuk, Honoured artist of Ukraine is starring as Princess Turandot and Oleksey Repchins’ky is singing Calàf. Other cast: Sergiy Krasnykh (The Emperor Altoum), Igor Tsarkov (Timur, the deposed King of Tartary), Yulia Tereschuk (Liù, a slave girl), Volodymir Muraschenko (Ping, Lord Chancellor), Ruslan Zinevich (Pang, Majordomo), Andriy Perfilov (Pong, Head chef of the Imperial Kitchen), Yury Dudar (a Mandarin), Iryna Oleksiv, Katherina Tsymbalyuk, soloists of Odessa Ballet, choir and orchestra also.

Conductor – Alexandru Samoile, People’s artist of Republic of Moldova. Opera director – Christian von Götz (Germany).

 

 

 About Leonid Butenko:

Leonid Butenko is the Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine, PhD in History of Arts, and Professor of the Nezhdanova Odessa National Musical Academy. He is a member of National Union of Theatre Workers of Ukraine.

Leonid Butenko has been Principal choirmaster of the Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre since 1974. He has taken part in production of cantata-oratorio pieces, different concert programmes and more than 100 classical productions, such as Aida, Un ballo in maschera, Il trovatore, Rigoletto by G. Verdi; Lucia di Lammermoor by G. Donizetti; The Queen of Spades, Iolanta, The Maid of Orleans, Eugene Onegin by P. Tchaikovsky; Boris Godunov, Khovanshchina by M. Mussorgsky; Don Giovanni by Mozart; Carmen by Bizet; Tosca, La bohème, Madam Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini; The Tsar’s Bride by N. Rimsky-Korsakov; Aleko by S. Rachmaninoff, Catherina by N. Arkas; Cossacks in Exile Hulak-Artemovsky, Natalka Poltavka by N. Lysenko, etc.

It is quite notable that Leonid Butenko was the first to work as a choirmaster on the world premiers of the pieces by contemporary Ukrainian and foreign composers. We can name Cyril Kozhemyaka by E. Yutskevich (1982); Just One Day by M. Karminsky (1987); Viy by V.Hubarenko (1984); True Love by L. Kolodub, War and Peace by V. Ovchinnikov (1987), as well as productions from Ukrainian classical music art, such as Sir Kotsky by N. Lysenko; Barvinok by V. Filippenko and others.

Leonid Butenko has toured with Odessa Opera company in 16 countries, namely England, Belgium, Belorussia, Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Cyprus, Lebanon, Moldova, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, and Romania.

Leonid Butenko is also a scholar in the field of choir singing. He has written more than 40 scientific works, in particular, a number of books and articles. He is the only author for the course book called Singing in an Opera Choir that is used in higher educational institutions. Mr. Butenko is a Specialized Board Member of the Nezhdanova Odessa National Musical Academy. The Board makes decisions as for awarding applicants with the PhD degree (Kandidat Nauk in Ukrainian classification) in the History of Arts.

A lot of graduates from Leonid Buneko’s Choirmaster class have been quite successful in their professional lives both in Ukraine and abroad. We can name prizewinners of All-Ukraine and International Contests L.Garbuz, R. Verenina, L. Kushneruk, I. Gritsenko.
