Don Giovanni by Mozart is on stage of the Odessa Opera on Sept 19

On Thursday, September 19, you will have an opportunity to enjoy Don Giovanni by W. A. Mozart in the director’s cut of Yuri Alexandrov, People’s Artist of Russia, on the stage of the Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. The performance starts at 6:30 pm.

Vasily Dobrovolsky is leading in the title role. Other singers featuring in the performance are Larisa Zuenko, Honoured Artist of Ukraine (Donna Anna), Vladislav Gorai, Honoured Artist of Ukraine (Don Ottavio), Victor Shevchenko (Leporello), Yulia Tereshchuk (Donna Elvira), Igor Tsarkov (Il Commendatore), Yuri Dudar (Mazetto), Alina Vorokh (Zerlina), chorus and ballet of the Odessa Opera.

Alexandru Samolile, People’s Artist of Moldova, is conducting the performance.

Yuri Alexadrov has pulled the action of the opera to the present days, the elite skiing resort. In his version Don Giovanni becomes a victim of an evil joke that Don Ottavio, Donna Anna and their friends make.

“It is important to me if the audience notices new traits in traditional characters”, the director says about his Odessa production of the opera by Mozart. However, in spite of the untraditional interpretation of the story the score has been preserved intact. 

The premiere of the Don Giovanni in the director’s cut of Yuri Alexandov took place in the Odessa Opera on April 28 and May 4, 2012.
