The premiere of the opera "Dido and Aeneas" will be held on June, 3.

Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695) is a prominent English composer, a classicist of national composition school. Music for drama productions, cantatas, vocal duets, chamber and instrumental works, pieces for harpsichord and organ, antemy, hymns and psalms are of special importance among his multifaceted creative heritage. "Dido and Aeneas" takes a special place in his creative work, which became a foundation for English national opera. The expressive power of music, the clairvoyance of the drama permitted this single opera to retain and confirm the value of this genre in the history of the British culture.
"Dido and Aeneas" was written by Purcell for an amateur performance at the girls’ school in 1689. The opera was created in collaboration with the dancing-master, the owner of the boarding school for ladies, Josias Priest and the librettist Nahum Tate who was a famous poet and dramatist at that time. The plot of “Dido and Aeneas” was borrowed from an epic poem "Aeneid" by Virgil. The librettist mixed in the content the themes, rooting in the national theatrical traditions, such as scenes with the spiritual powers, the fairy-tale symbols – Sorceress and two witches or the choir scene of the sailors in the port. As a result the features of the theatre of the Restoration Age, lyrical tragedy, popular comedy and English Renaissance theatre were blended. But the plot of the ancient variant is preserved– an eternal fight between good and evil.

The theatrical premiere of the opera was held 10 years later. It was performed with the play "Measure for Measure" by William Shakespeare. In 1704 the opera was revived at Royal Theatre (there were two performances). Among modern versions of the opera the most popular is the one by the English composer B. Britten. Due to his version the opera had its rebirth on many stages.
