The opera Madam Butterfly will be dedicated to People’s Artist of Ukrainian SSR Galina POLIVANOVA’s jubilee

The opera Madam Butterfly that is on stage of the Odessa Opera on April 25 will be dedicated to the People’s Artist of Ukrainian SSR Galina POLIVANOVA’s jubilee. Her theatrical career started with the leading part in that Giacomo Puccini’s opera in 1953.


There are more than 40 leading parts in Ms. POLIVANOVA’s repertoire. The most prominent ones are “Lady Macbeth” in the opera Macbeth, “Desdemona” in Othello, “Aida” in the same name opera, “Violetta” in La Traviata by G. Verdi; “Maria” in Mazepa, “Liza” in Pique Dame, “Tatiana” in Eugene Onegin by P. Tchaikovsky and many others. The singer has performed on the opera stages of Kiev, Moscow, Minsk, Voronezh, Riga, Chisinau, Kazan, and St. Petersburg. She has toured Albania, Afghanistan, India, Bulgaria, Poland, Germany, Spain, Norway, Switzerland, France, and Finland.

In 1960 Galina POLIVANOVA was granted the title of the People’s Artist of Ukrainian SSR. She has been heading the Solo Singing Chair at the Nezhdanova Odessa State Conservatory (National Academy of Music at present). She has educated a number of outstanding singers, such as People’s Artist of Ukraine Tatiana ANISIMOVA (National Opera of Ukraine) as well as soloists of the Odessa Opera, namely Honored Artists of Ukraine Larisa ZUENKO, Tetyana SPAS’KA and Natalia SHEVCHENKO, Laureates of International Competitions Victor SHEVCHENKO, Natalia PAVLENKO, Ivan FLYAK, Natalia KADANTSEVA and many others.

Laureate of international competitions Julia TERESHCHUK, another Prof. POLIVANOVA’s student sings “Cio-Cio-san” part in the 25th of April performance. It is going to be a debut of the young singer in the opera Madam Butterfly on the Odessa Opera stage.

The Odessa Opera soloist Catherina TSYMBALYUK, Laureate of international competitions, sings the part of “Suzuki”, Cio-Cio-san’s maid, for the first time.

Other performers are Oleksiy REPCHINSKY (“Pinkerton”), Taisiya SHAFRANSKA (“Kate”), Olexander STRYUK (“Sharpless”), Sergiy KRASNYKH (“Goro”), Olexander PATRIK (“The Imperial Commissioner”). People’s Artist of Ukraine Volodymir TARASOV sings the part of “Bonze” and Pavlo YERMOLENKO performs the part of “Prince Yamadori”.

Principal Conductor of the Odessa Opera Alexandru SAMOILĂ, People’s Artist of the Republic of Moldova, conducts the performance.

The performance starts at 6:30 pm.
