Announcement. Oratorio “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn.

 January, 8 one of the best works by Felix Mendelssohn will be held. It is his “swan song” – the oratorio “Elijah” for the soloists, choir and orchestra, that will be introduced  as a part of Christmas Festival-2016 devoted to the 170th anniversary of the world premiere.

The premiere of the oratorio "Elijah" was held in Birmingham in 1846. "None of my works, at its first night, was such great success and was accepted so heartily both by the performers and the audience, as this oratorio" - Mendelssohn wrote to his brother. The work was composed keeping the best traditions of Handel and Bach. At the same time, the music has romantic inspiration and sincerity of feelings.

The main character of the oratorio - the Old Testament prophet Elijah. He proclaims the Divine will, eliminates the natural disasters, disease and death, and according to the Bible, Elijah is enheavened on a fiery chariot.
